Your Seven Evolutionary Stages of Ai Adoption

November, 2023 - Thanksgiving holiday is upon us, with the slide into 2024 just around the corner.

Artificial Intelligence, whatever that is, after 12 months, remains the hottest topic in business, technology, and society. Juxtaposed with war in the middle east, and the Ukraine, echoes of WW II industrial genocide, China being Communist, the post-fear-of-Covid rebuild, economic stress, even in 'the Age of Aquarius" and the mass acceptance of large language models will STILL go down as one of the most significant pivot points in human history - like the discovery of fire, invention of clothing and the wheel.

Today's AI adoption is on par with humanity's development of speech. Along those lines, there are groups of humans, using LLMs, to decode the language of animals.

With all this seemingly chaotic turbulence(true disruption, extinction level events, is extremely rare, ) experts are crawling out from underneath every 'machine learning' rock promising AI Nirvana.

Feeding on a fear of the Unknown, these charlatans promise security through guidelines and structures, not strength. They propose phased approaches, cautionary usage and timid adoption rates. They see AI through the lens of yesterday's Enterprise applying outdated "KPIs" and "benchmarks". Taylorism has run its course. We cannot see the future through the lens of yesterday.

It's like telling everyone the World of AI is Flat. It isn't. The world of AI is Alien. The World of AI is multidimensional; Galactic and Quantum - AI is the double slit experiment

Here are my ideas about and a timeline for AI adoption.

The Fear of Ai Will Eat You Alive

"Hot take: ChatGPT is not that useful. With the current OpenAI storm increasing the hype, now is a great time to question it.

➤ Background
👉More often than companies like OpenAI want to admit, generative AI is the wrong tool for the job.
👉It is time to admit that, often, generative AI is a hammer looking for a nail.
👉Here are two examples from my own work.

➤ Summarizing text
😕Using generative AI to summarize text never works well for me because the summaries fail to reflect what I think is important in the text.
😕The cause is that summarizing text is not a technical task. It requires decisions on what is important, which depends on context and values.
😕Can you put the context and values into the prompt? Maybe sometimes. But that hasn't worked well in my case, and the attempts take longer than just summarizing the text myself.

➤ First drafts, brainstorming, and outlining
😕This is the worst use of generative AI for me. The output is usually banal. But the main problem is that it constrains my thinking and wastes time.
😕Writing the first draft is sensitive work because it shapes how you think about the project. It's difficult to recover from a bad first draft because it's difficult to re-imagine what you've already imagined.
😕Can you solve the problem with better prompt engineering? Maybe sometimes. But when the task is to articulate a thought baking in your mind, generative AI can lead you astray. It gives you a mesh of other people's thoughts and that can drown your own.

➤ All of this is not to say that generative AI is useless.
👉I do think it's a revolutionary technology with many helpful applications, including in my own work. For example, the image in the banner below is AI-generated!
👉But the usefulness is not to the extent that companies like OpenAI would have us believe.

Artist RJ Palmer, who spoke to The Guardian, expressed concerns that echo throughout the art community. "The main concern for me is what this does to the future of not just my industry, but creative human industries in general," says Palmer (The Guardian, November 2022).

In a recent class-action lawsuit, U.S. District Judge William Orrick ruled that determining whether AI-generated images violate copyright laws is "not plausible" at the moment. "The other problem for plaintiffs is that it is simply not plausible that every Training Image used to train Stable Diffusion was copyrighted," Orrick wrote (Reuters, October 30, 2023).
